Our Practice Has Prepared Us for This
In these times of great change—with political instability, economic uncertainty, and the constant witnessing of political injustice—it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. The rapid pace of events can leave us feeling disoriented, stuck in cycles of stress, or unsure of how to respond. Some of us withdraw into self-medicating, destructive routines, while others find ourselves compulsively refreshing the news, hoping that more information will bring clarity.
Neither response truly serves us.
In my yoga classes, we have been discussing the wise use of attention—how to balance self-care, mindfulness, and courage in times of turmoil. We cannot take wise action if our physical and emotional health is compromised.
But here’s the truth: our energy is precious. Where we place our attention matters.
Let’s be intentional.
Stay informed, but don’t be consumed. In this intense time, I find much-needed laughter by watching SNL or The Daily Show—a reminder that humor can be a powerful antidote to stress.
Step outside. A walk in nature can be just as informative as a scroll through headlines, offering perspective and grounding, reminding us of what is most important to us.
Lean into community. Spend time with people who share your values and inspire action. We are not alone in this.
Create spaciousness in your heart. When we find calm within, we can respond with clarity rather than fear.
Last Friday, I attended the Stand Up for Science Rally (photo above)—a powerful reminder that people are showing up, speaking up, and taking action. It was energizing to be among thousands who refuse to be silent. In moments like that, I remember that our years of yoga practice have prepared us for this—to navigate uncertainty, to stay present, and to stand strong.💪
With love and resilience,
Ai
