Enjoyed summer too much? Tips to get back in healthy mode

Our kids just went back to school last week. Summer is feeling shorter and shorter these days!

If you have kids, back to school often means that your life goes back to more regular, quieter, and less chaotic.

For some of you, you have a house that is too quiet because your kids left for college and you want to do something for yourself (so you don’t feel too sad!)

This time of year is a great time to shift back to a healthier routine that is aligned with your wellness vision.

Many of my clients mentioned to me that they gained weight during summer (because summer is meant to be fun! The break from our normal grind is important.) – and they want to kick start the fall in better shape. If you are feeling the same, you are not alone!
Are you thinking of making some shifts for the fall season so you can help your family and yourself get back to a healthier habit?

Consider spending time in the kitchen a bit more.

Research shows over and over that home cooked meals are some of the best ways to have better nutrition and prevent obesity. A recent study also reported that families who eat together but without TV/screen time were much more likely to have healthy weight.

Sitting down to eat, regardless of if you eat with others, has been found to be health-promoting too.

Many of you also told me that you are afraid of cooking.

If that’s the case, start with something easy. If you can make a morning smoothie to start your day, it is a big win! You don’t have to suddenly become an amazing home chef overnight. Start with one thing, continue until you feel comfortable. Then try something new. New habits take time to settle.

I am sharing below one of our family’s’ favorite summer dishes- Caprese salad with heirloom tomatoes and burrata! Our kids love it and take it for lunch too. It literally takes you 5 minutes to prepare and is perfect on a hot day. Tomatoes are delicious right now so eat a lot of them! Enjoy this dish with fresh bread of your choice to scoop up all the juicy sauce at the end :)

Caprese Salad

Ingredients (serves 4)

  • Organic heirloom tomatoes, sliced (3-4)

  • Burrata (2-3, you can also use fresh mozzarella)

  • Fresh basils (10-15 leaves)

  • Extra virgin olive oil

  • Balsamic vinegar (good quality, I like fig balsamic for this)

  • Good salt

Directions

  1. Arrange the plate with sliced tomatoes, burrata (whole or cut), and basils

  2. Dress with olive oil and balsamic vinegar

  3. Season with salt
